Description of this organization: The Research Center “Athena” was established in 2003 as a Center for Applications of Communication and Information Technologies with the goal of collecting and continuing to expand research and development actions and initiatives in the field of Information Technology and Communications. The Center was renamed the Research Center for Innovation in Information, Communication, and Knowledge Technologies (Athena) in 2006.
The perspective of “Athena” is to support the entire cycle of research and innovation, beginning with basic as well as applied research, proceeding with the development and support of systems and products, and concluding with technology transfer and entrepreneurship.
Description of what they do in regards to urban gardening: The centre has a number of proejcts, including the URBANA project. By fostering social innovation and collective awareness of urban sustainability, the URBANA project will create a technologically innovative platform to build a “bridge” of knowledge exchange between Agricultural Advisors and Urban Growers. Users will have the ability to present small-scale urban crops, as well as other activities related to urban agriculture that they have implemented or are integrating in the form of Do It Yourself (DIY) projects, through URBANA, while also leveraging information and advice collected from crowd funding mechanisms, IoT sensors, and social networks.
