Description of this organization: Neapoli–Sykies is a municipality of the Thessaloniki Urban Area in the regional unit of Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, Greece and part of the Thessaloniki Urban Area. The seat of the municipality is in Sykies. The municipality has an area of 12.903 km2

Description of what they do in regards to urban gardening: The Municipality of Neapoli-Sykies decided to select an area of 1,000 m2 and divided it into small plots at the disposal of disadvantaged households for a minimum of two years in July 2012, in the middle of the Greek financial crisis. Beneficiaries can use this area to grow fresh, healthy foods for their own consumption after being chosen by the municipality based on social factors.

OBJECTIVES

To have the production of wholesome, fresh goods by customers themselves. To support disadvantaged urban residents through lowering their food costs and enhancing their quality of life.A 40m2 allotment plot is given to households chosen by the municipality so they can cultivate their own produce in it. Any variety may be grown, but only using organic techniques. In this way, they are routinely under the supervision of agricultural professionals. The municipality also offers free water, seeds, plants, and equipment to the recipients. Beneficiaries only need to donate 10% of their harvest to the Neapoli-Sykies Social Grocery Store. The remainder can be kept for personal consumption.
